Surface Pen

I have been using Waveform 9 and there is a strange thing going on with the interface with regards to the surface pen and touch.
There are certain commands I can use with the surface pen and then other that will only work using touch or the keyboard.
For instance I can use the pen to activate the volume button for each track but when I try to use the pen for actually using it it disappears.
Frustrating as the surface pen is ideal for the size of icons.
