Bitwig Studio 2 8-Track will be free with issue 264 of Computer Music magazine. And the advertising blurb states that there will be a "massive tutorial course". Hopefully this means more tips and tricks for Bitwig in CM moving forward. And of course more users getting in to Bitwig!

Once the digital release is out, lets all forward this to all our friends - if they ever had an excuse for not trying Bitwig, this will throw this argument out of their hands!

Well that was a waste of £6.99 for a magazine which I will never read.
Two VSTs only allowed and then it goes into demo mode. What good is two VSTs to anyone ?
Whats the point of giving you 8 tracks if only two of them can be used ?

Two VSTs, but obviously you can bounce them to audio and - more importantly - you can use all the native devices except Phase-4. I guess that's the point of demo version, so that you can see if *Bitwig* is for you, because all your VSTs work the same in any other DAW.
Also, that £6.99 gives you access to on-line library of 80+ VST instruments & effects from the past CM issues, so I'm not really sure how it's a 'waste'

Because this forum is so into EDM and electronica, It is assumed that everyone is interested in synths. I have no need for any of the synths they have to offer, even if they can modulate and jump through hoops. I would be interested in the acoustic instruments like piano, but they are "meh".antic604 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 29, 2018 9:10 am

The only reason I wanted it for was as a loop style DAW. But as I am limited to only two VSTs, it holds zero interest to me. Who wants to be messing around with bouncing VSTs to audio ? The whole point of a looping DAW is its immediacy. I already have my linear needs covered with Studio one 4. Ableton Lite allows 8 VSTs, the least they could have done is stay on par with the market leader.

Regardless of your expectations, it's still just a demo version. Either deal with the limitations and buy the full thing if you like it, or stick with the "market leader".dellboy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 29, 2018 9:55 amBecause this forum is so into EDM and electronica, It is assumed that everyone is interested in synths. Also, you could've read about the features of 8-Track (https://www.bitwig.com/en/8-track/featu ... rison.html) before "wasting" GBP7, so that you could avoid it.

You are right, it is just a demo. Ableton Lite, on the other hand is a usable DAW that is limited to 8 tracks. Why they cannot just offer it as a free download from their website is strange, as no one is going to want to use it for anything other than a demo. And you are also right that I should have checked up about its limitations. But you have to admit that the cover picture does give the impression that it is an 8 track VST DAW. And as we always have the inevitable Live versus Bitwig arguments its easy to think that it could load 8 VSTs.antic604 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 29, 2018 10:30 am

The "market leader" jibe I've mine was uncalled for, but I was a bit peeved when it went into demo mode.

Think about it from Bitwig's perspective as a company - they're 10 persons and they can't afford to give away a fully functioning DAW, because if the only limitation was 8 tracks then many people wouldn't buy the full thing, because - with multi-channel MIDI support in 2.4, MIDI filter and Instrument Layer devices and multi-lane editor - you can actually have 16 tracks on a single track! They want you to have a taste for Bitwig and buy it. It's the same with the actual demo version, that isn't feature restricted but you can't save your project.dellboy wrote: ↑Thu Nov 29, 2018 10:49 amYou are right, it is just a demo. Ableton is happy to give away Lite with gear (it also can't just by d/l from their website) because they've been on the market for almost 2 decades, have Push side-business, likely 100x more active users and well over 200 employees. They can simply afford it. You just can't compare them in terms of business models and expect the same.
Looking at it from this perspective: a) it's a miracle how Bitwig beats Live on so many fronts, b) it makes me want to support the team, so even if I don't use it exclusively I buy each update whenever it comes out

OK, now its getting silly.
I thought I would give it another go using external hardware. So I find out that you need to use a "hardware device" on each track. I loaded up one and got my Roland XV to put out sound - great. Loaded up another track and it went into demo mode. It appears that you are only allowed one track routed to hardware. Really ?
edit:I have uninstalled it.

and you can use the new sampler, which, i fully admit after being very sceptic, is really an awesome reworking and a solid base for future things. that alone is worth an 8-track installation, for just testing out the new sampler, which i did and therefor changed my mind.
i wish they would implement something like abletons capture into the full version on the next big number update.
i dont see any "waste" in buying and reading that mag too. always delivers neat stuff and an extra with all that plugins.
and btw 8-track goes into demo mode?
i guess that guy did something wrong or missed a registration to get the serial from computer music magazine. the whole process is a bit of a hustle and longer than the usual install-and-paste-a-serial thing, but then 8-track is a fully usable daw in its restriction. no demo no timelimits etc...

No, he means 8-Track went into demo mode after he added 2nd HW-Instrument device, which is a correct behaviour according to the features of 8-Track:anttimaatteri wrote: ↑Thu Nov 29, 2018 12:55 pmi guess that guy did something wrong or missed a registration to get the serial from computer music magazine.
