Cloned controllers, how bad can they really be ?

Hi guys I would like to hear your thoughts on 'cloned midi controllers' ( others may call them cheap imitations or rip offs ).
I like I'm sure most of you only have quality branded midi controllers i.e in my case Novation, Akai ,Alesis etc.
It's not everyone that can afford to pay for some of the high end controllers and looking at some of these 'chinese' made models, to me they look like they would do the job quite well.
There are lots more cheaper controllers out there too obviously.
