MSF Keyswitches - A Mini How-To Tutorial

In MSF bank MPs and keyswitches to control them seem to be a natural pairing. After playing around a bit, I found it's extremely easy to do this. The only thing lacking is a way to communicate the assignments to the user in a nice graphic way like Kontakt does.

The example preset below has a three-item bank that controls the waveform selected for an oscillator. The keyswitches defined are MIDI notes 36 thru 38. The preset should be self-explanatory. However, observe that those notes are also put out of the range of playable notes, this happening in the Global/Advanced window.

Yes, I thought of the first option, but it struck me as a royal PITA for the user who wanted to change the key assignments. The second option seems much preferable since it's rather easier to make all the changes in a single edit window. But, still, if the user doesn't ask for the information, the availability of keyswitches will remain unknown - although that's still way better than zero information to begin with.

By the way, in the Melda universe, the C two octaves below middle C is C2, is it not? Just to be safe, always including the MIDI note number in parens after the note "name" seems to be a good plan.

dmbaer: Yes, there's no real standard for octave numbering, or more like everyone uses something different. In the early days I think I adopted convention from Cubase or something.

While playing piano the C, positioned in the exact middle of the piano (often where the lit-keyhole is) is C0...hope that helps.

There are three commonly found conventions. Most prevalent is C3 for middle C. But outside the MIDI-influenced world (which has been around a lot longer than MIDI), C4 is more or less the standard. Finally, there's good justification to make C5 middle C, since that makes MIDI note number 0 to be C0.

Moral of the story: always include the MIDI note number, just as is done in the MIDI note assignment window in Melda software.
