Silly question. But anyone ! Why does the volume of tracks go up or down when I mute tracks.. yeah I know but it bugs me !?

For instance two tracks drums and bass. Bass muted drums playing. Un mute the bass while the track is playing and the drum track volume dips along side it

Well, perceived volume is a whole huge subject in itself. In this case, it sounds most likely that the drum track is already very loud and when the bass comes in, also very loud, the increase isn't what one might expect and thus the drums sound like they're quieter.

...or the bass is louder than the drums, and a plugin with autogain or similar effect is in the chain?
