Time stretching?

Hi
Can someone tell me how to time stretch a drum loop with say an original bpm of 120 to 130, and keeping the original pitch the same? The help file mentions a "keep original pitch" button - where is it?
Also, can I change the "r" record shortcut to "*" which is what I was previously used to?
Many thanks.

1. press alt and drag the clip left or right while grabbing it at the little right triangle symbol (at the top of the clip)
2. go to the settings tab (at the top of Tracktion)
- there chose 'keyboard-shortcuts' (or something similar) - look for the 'record-entry'

1) As Jens says but you'll need to select a stretch quality from the Stretch box in the properties window too (it used to be 'keep original pitch' but Tracktions moved on, the manual hasn't...)
Of course whether you like what you hear when it's stretched is another topic alltogether...
)
2) Don't think '*' is in the list of assignable keys (I wanted to use it for another function too) Maybe wrong though...

OK, so it doesn't really do timestretching - funny cos I read a review in Sound on Sound that suggested it was perfect for stretching drum loops whilst keeping the pitch the same. When I try to stretch, the pitch alters dramatically. No big deal, but it would have been nice!GaryG wrote:1) Of course whether you like what you hear when it's stretched is another topic alltogether...)

You must still be selecting wrong, because the pitch does not change whatsoever; however, the sound quality is crap-tastic with the current algorhythm. Good for special effects but little else.
Two things to remember--
1. The stretch will either expand or compress EVERYTHING, including tails, fades, and other transients. A crash cymbal, for example, will still remain in pitch, but will sound artificial due to an unnaturally long or short tail. That's why people use beatslicers for certain applications.
2. The horrible-sounding algorhythm may distort your signal so badly that your ears will tell you the pitch has changed, when in fact the actual PITCH hasn't, but the sound has been mangled beyond recognition.

In case anyone needs a free, brilliant timestretching facilty, be aware that the CM version of Muzys does it perfectly. Go to Wave Labo, open a wav file, then DSP funx, then time stretching.Furthermore, you can export the amended file to your favourite sequencer!

A good idea, Bill! I have to admit, I haven't used CMuzys at all, really, having been put off by its steep learning curve for absolute beginners. Now that I'm a bit more comfortable with various softwares and concepts, I should peek into it to see if it will complement my setup.
Cheers!

I use Zero-X Beat Creator. A little pricey, but smooth as silk to my ears. Plus you get all the beat slicing. Annoyed by having to pre-select a set of loops and fills, and convert them to the desired tempo. It is batchable but I've been too lazy to figure that out.
T2 needs a good high-quality stretcher for working with loops. Stretching and looping was one thing that I find truly impressive about Sonar and ACIDized loops -- just grab the handle and drag. Slick as snot.
Oh and did I mention that T2 NEEDS A DECENT STRETCHER!!

Would it be possible to add CMuzys as an editor in Tracktion and have the Wave Labo pick up any wave file for editing without exporting from Tracktion first?Bill wrote:In case anyone needs a free, brilliant timestretching facilty, be aware that the CM version of Muzys does it perfectly. My guess is you may have to import into CMuzyz and then export, followed by an import into Tracktion.

For many applications and situations, possibly still a very worthwhile step. (still haven't checked out CMuzys again yet though).

A very good point AD80 why not email Jules about this before Jorgen does!AD80 wrote:Jules should contact Jo and get his time stretch algo. He doesnt need it anymore.
Seriously...Jules may very well be interested.
