Is installing over an existing version ok when you update the plugin version?

I'm sure that I've read about it here or in an FAQ, but I'm searching for this information since 20 minutes now. :dog:

Is it always fine to install a newer uhe plugin version on top, so without installing or so?

I want to update my Presswerk for example and also haven't installed the last Diva update so far. So I'm asking myself if I just can download the latest installer and install it over the existing installation. Or if there can be a clash.

Post

Yes, unless there's a special notice about doing an uninstall first in release notes.

Thanks a lot.

Just be careful not to select a new or incorrect data folder, and to install all the same plug-in versions. Mismatches will lead to crashes. When that occurs, an uninstall/reinstall will fix it.

In general, that's the way to update. Download, extract, run installer, install over existing copy.

The important thing is to install the same plugin formats that you already have installed. If you already have an old VST2 without the new browser installed, but then you choose not to install VST2 when updating to a newer version with the new browser, this will leave you with two different plugin versions on your system.

In such a scenario, if you load the new VST3, it'll work just fine. But if you load the old VST2, it will not know how to handle the new preset system, so a lot of evil things could happen, most likely involving crashes.
Cheers
