Ambisonics support?

Since MeldaProduction plugins support multiple channel modes (from stereo, to M/S to Surround) would it be a big technical hurdle to add Ambisonics B format support as well?

Ambisonics are a bit more complicated than normal multi-channel surround. A first order B-format Ambisonic stream is a bit like Mid-Side, but with 3 axes. You have Omni + X phase difference + Y phase difference + Z phase difference. Therefore you can't operate on the channels in quite the same way as you do with basic multichannel. If you increase the amplitude of the XYZ channels, you make the signal wider, the same way when you increase the amplitude of a Side channel, and this can change the scale of the spatiality in undesired ways. To retain the spatiality the processing needs to keep this in mind.

But if Ambisonic support were added to the MeldaProduction audio kernel, it would give us access to a vast, powerful set of plugins for all kinds of cool processing of audio for VR videos. :)

I'm afraid that's not really planned sorry. There's just no dev time left...

One for the backlog then? Perhaps in the distant future there is dev time for this. :tu:

I'm bumping this because it's been nearly a year.

3D audio is a major focus of next gen game consoles (Microsoft/Sony) and ambisonic audio is going to become increasingly important to those of us working in game audio. I already know folks working in 5th order ambisonic now, which uses 36 channels. This isn't some crazy academic stuff, this is going to be mainstream in my field of audio production very soon.

There is currently a gap in the market for ambisonic support from the 'normal' plugin developers. An early push by melda would get them a foothold into that market and get people the tools they need to make the most of the medium... good for everyone.

I know Vojtech is very busy with MSF, but I wanted to throw this out there.

How do you monitor these recordings? Multiple speakers?

36 channels? Holy crap, that seems very very difficult technical wise (I mean the audio interfaces, playback systems...)

Well, the 36 channels are just the encoded format, you'd monitor it back in whatever format your system supports (binaural stereo, 5.1 surround, 7.1.4 Atmos, etc). Think of ambisonic as being a universal format, a sphere surrounding the listener that is then converted into any output that the user can listen to when played back. So to work in 36 channel ambisonic you don't need any more output channels on your hardware.

Another way to think of ambisonic is it's like mid-side, but with more dimensions. You don't listen to mid-side directly, you have to decode it into stereo L/R first. Ambisonic is the same, but rather than stereo it is in all 3 dimensions, like a sphere around you.

You shouldn't process the raw ambi signals as it could mess with the phase and break the phase correlation, you'd want to decode into 'normal', then process, then encode back again. I'm asking for melda to support the decode/process/encode as part of their signal input system (button in top right).

Hope that makes sense!

I'll check the info! Though I wouldn't count on it anytime soon to be honest.

5th order is a bit overkill for most applications. 3rd order would be nice. But most effects are challenging to implement in Ambisonics.

What I don't understand from the webpage is if it is always encoded in 4 channels, or more? And what is the point of all this anyways? I must say it's all a bit confusing - e.g. why isn't this stored as normal channels instead of the "encoded format"?

I don't know but my Sound Devices MixPre-6 ii supports ambisonic recording. From what I gather, it's for VR. Seems interesting but I'm still trying to master stereo.

I sometimes used IEM Plug-in Suite with Reaper for Sound Effects.
Before integrating it into the Ambisonic bus, I adjusted the source sound with some Melda plugins.
While working I checked the decoded surround soundson Wave Nx with Headphone.
Finally the sound was played by the hall's surround system.
