Hi there,
are the backwards compatibility issues only for different skins?
Will I be able to load old sessions with Melda 12 and "run" the automation in ProTools sessions?

You should be able too, yes. And you can always reinstall v12 (keep the latest v12 installer somewhere safe).
Automation changed going from v10 to v11. But there is an "Automation compatibility mode for V10" setting you can enable, if needed.
And v12 skins will mostly work for v13 too (but they don't (yet) have the new images - centralised arcs for knob values etc
