Please can someone tell me if an Internet connection is needed when working with mulab? Will the key work by inserting it with no Internet connection?

Indeed no internet connection needed. Only your personal MuLab 8 user key. Always keep your user key private to your eyes only (never share it) and make a secure backup so you can retrieve it when needed. (eg when switching to a new computer)
