[SOLVED] MDrummer: using silences (C4)

Whereas there's ample and creative functionality regarding fills, I found that inserting brief silences (C4) here and there in a MDrummer MIDI track can also work wonders in adding breathing space. These 'silences' can be very short, at the 16th note level for instance, or longer.

Although I haven't tried it yet, these would work using many MIDI channels, thus adding expressiveness in parallel percussion channels and such.

Cheers.

It could be nice if the resolution of the 'silences' could be finer than the start of the next bar. If it was possible to introduce silences at the, say, 1/8th level.

Actually stop command should work immediately! In fact other commands do work immediately too, only beats take effect on the next bar, since that's how real drummers work.

re. "stop command should work immediately" - that's not what I'm seeing/hearing Vojta. But Im new to MDrummer and meant to ask exactly this question - how to program short silences? Look at attached image where Im using MIDI B-1 and C3 to start and stop and what audio it renders. C3 always produces hit and and then stops. This is MDrummer 13.05.
Thanks,

Assuming the real drummer works at all.

Real drummers ? They exist ?

Joking aside, on the current piece I'm working on, MDrummer is simply great. The fills are gorgeous. The thing is more about not inserting too many of these fills.

Does MDrummer have some kind of an improvisation function ?

Cheers.

I must admit that why I love MDrummer is that in spite of being a software it showed me (taught me?) how real drummers approach drumming. There is something very organic and live going on when Im using it. I love it. So well done Vojta on translating your passion for drumming into software which is not robotic.

Now back to my above question: how can I make the drumming more un-human using "random" silencing? :-)

Pardon the aside but, babbid, I see you use Maschine mk3. I have mk2 and got miffed when they didn't put the ability to color groups and sounds from hardware in my model. Being that you use MDrummer and Maschine, what's your workflow like?

I never took to Maschine as software but it makes a darn fine MIDI controller for Reaper. The browser is also pretty good given the tagging features and hands-on approach. Apparently, they're considering a subscription model but, due to feature-locking, I'm not sure if I should put them in the Waves/Ableton category; forgive me but I'm bitter about Live too.

hexspa, Im quite new to music making so I don't feel qualified at all to comment on questions you are posing. I don't use Maschine with MDrummer at all. My workflow these days focuses on Live. I feel more like a music programmer than a musician, which is a bit sad, but that's where I am right now and it will change in time too. I like sampling on MK3 and I think it is more fun and playful than Push. Though Push with Live is excellent combo too. In the end it's all about what you have and what works for you. Im happy to stick with what I have for few years now and master it like an instrument. And perhaps then I will be able to answer your questions. :-)

Funny because I feel like a musician learning to program.

Can't argue with 'use what you got'.

Or how Chino Moreno said it, "It's how you wear it, not what it is!"

Thanks and back to the subject at hand.

Haha I like to think of myself as functional, but who knows, sometimes our singer doesn't seem to be persuaded I am :D :D

To the topic - I checked that sometimes the Stop command indeed doesn't seem to work immediately :o. What the hell! Need to check it out...

Change log for MDrummer 14.00 says:
Fix: Stop command could be ignored in some extreme circumstances.
Which I thought is fixing what we discussed in this thread but it is not. Just FYI.

Have a look at the image I posted earlier - the MIDI keeps alternating between B-1 and C3 notes and resulting audio always contains a hit where C3 (silence) was placed.

That's correct. You simply need to move the stop command earlier.
