I wondered why my .tracktionedit had swollen to 1.2MB when there was nothing in it¹, so I looked — only to find that the file was now binary. So were several other of my .tracktionedits. It still worked, and deliberately saving it turned it back into xml, but even so, that probably shouldn't be happening.

Saving binary edits is faster, so the temp edits a binary. If Waveform crashes and you choose to open the temp version, you'll get the binary file until you save again.
