Record dry, listen wet

Is it possible to record vocals whilst monitoring the vocals with a reverb for example, but to have the performance recorded without the effect? I have tried recording on track one, outputting track 1 to track 2 and putting the reverb on track 2, but that didn't work.

Thanks.

If you are using a VST reverb (as oppose to hardware reverb) then that is how it works.
The input is always recorded dry.
Just plug your mic into track one, use a VST reverb
like Ambience and hit record.
You will hear the the reverb but the signal recorded will be dry.
Later on you can remove the Ambiance reverb, change it or what ever you want.
This is the strong point of any VST.
You can always change it.

You only need to use one track, put the input to the left of it, the reverb on the right, adjust to taste, record. The recording is done dry, you can tweak the reverb afterwards.

If you're not hearing the reverb while you're recording make sure you've enabled "end to end" down in the bottom right near the master volume, and also end to end on the track you're recording onto.
"my gosh it's a friggin hardware"
