So I wrote the guitar part for my song and then wanted to add some refinement to the playing and add some dynamics to try and make it more interesting to listen to. Firstly I wanted to slow some of the strumming parts down, but not all the way through. How to do this, midi note editing seemed to be the sensible way forward. Just draw a midi note on the strum time line above the note/notes you want to adjust, adjust velocity to correspond with the required strum speed/time and move on. No, not that simple. The problem being that the velocity control only has 127 increments, whereas the strum time has 1000. That has required Ample Sound to divide 1000ms by 127 resulting in incremental jumps of 8 x. So you can currently only select 1ms, 8ms, 16ms, 24ms and so on. The corresponding velocity figures are 127, 126, 125 & 124. Great for ball park, but not for precision. Having corresponded with Ample Sound about this, there is currently no solution to this quirk. Having given the matter some thought, I first thought the best solution would be to allow the user to define the size of the increments, eg. 1 x, 2 x up to and including the existing setting of 8 x. This still has big limitations in editing as you would still be stuck within a range of 127 incremental changes per setting. Better and more user friendly maybe, but not the solution. As this is an issue only and totally within midi editing I have an alternative suggestion which I think would be workable and possibly not to big a task to request as a future update. Currently there is one position within the piano roll (midi editor) for strum time. (key 85) This falls within the confines of the keyboard layout for strummer in Ample Sound, but this is not a solution for the keyboard etc as if you are writing/editing within the stummer window you have full access to the strum time control knob. Therefore for midi editing alone, it should be possible to allocate an additional seven strum time lines (giving a total of eight) which could be allocated 127 velocity increments each thus covering the entire 1000ms at one for one. This feature would be purely available in midi note editing. On the keyboard layout, the last used key is key 107 which contains the Capo Logic function, therefore Keys 108,109,110, 111, 112, 113 & 114 could be used for the additional strum time positions. Key 85 is the location of the current strum time line and that could retain and use the first 127 velocity increments to correspond with the first 127ms increments. Key 108 would correspond to 128 to 255 etc etc. Personally, I find it easier to compose for stummer using midi notes than I do using the single bar window available in strummer, especially when there are a lot of chord changes in quick succession. The eight sequence slots get used up creating the into. I also prefer to hear many bars playing to ensure continuity and flow. A future update would be very helpful indeed and would enable full editing access of a very important parameter.
Music is everything, every thing else is just noise.
