Can't record system output with multisampler

I go to the Record page, select System Output on the little menu and then hit the record button, but there's no signal. Am I missing something obvious here? Or has this ever worked? Windows 10.

I've tried to get it to record as well and it got the same results. Maybe you need to switch from ASIO drivers for it to work, but then you might have to go thru the cable patching process again to set the RTL when you switch back to ASIO. It just didn't seem worth the hassle.
If it can work that would be nice for grabbing little snipets from places like archive.org.

I've managed to record the System Output but it was a little temperamental. It seems to stop functioning if you start and stop playing audio. For example, I started a video playing on YouTube and went to the Multi Sampler and saw that the audio was being heard. But then I changed my mind and went back to YouTube to change the video. When I went back to Multi Sampler, no audio was being heard. I could get it back by clicking on Sound and then Record for some reason.
This means that if you set it to System Output and then start to play audio, it won't work. You have to either start playing the audio first or else do the switching from Record to Sound to Record.
...and now that I have tested a variety of things it has stopped working completely. Even re-starting Waveform doesn't reset Multi-Sampler enough to record System Output.

Surely there must be consensus by now...

Some of that will depend on the sound card you have. I used to have a sound blaster, that allowed you to mix back and forth. My current system with a realtek audio is pretty limited unless you bring up their full utility; but still doesn't seem to have the mixer/options the old Soundblaster did - although it does have stereo, 5.1, 7.1, digital output...
One way to accomplish all this, if you HAVE access to a second PC, is to feed the audio output from the YouTube one into auxiliary or whatever else you use for audio input for tracktion/waveform on the other.

i'm using realtek audio and the Windows Audio driver on a Surface Book laptop.
Sampling from System Output works great here. A sampler that samples => so convenient!

Audacity nicely records all noise going to the speakers.
I've been using this: https://www.4kdownload.com/products/pro ... downloader to get hold of YT sounds. They arrive as MP3 for sound only or MP4 if you want the display.
If it helps.

Thanks guys. I switched off the Yamaha Steinberg ASIO driver I was using and tried WASAPI (Windows Audio). Works perfectly that way. So I guess ASIO is a no-go.

nice to know WASAPI worked for you. I will try the Yamaha ASIO driver (as well as some other ASIO drivers) when I get back to the studio (someday).
