The reason it's there is to make arbitrary "signals" available as modulator.
I have provided an example "FM" patch below, that uses GenCustomod instead of the FM module. It's just for the sake of explanation
The patch consists of the following 5 elements - check out the numbers in the picture below
1. Carrier: A simple Oscillator
2. Modulator: Another simple Oscillator
3. The GenCustomMod module which uses (2) as input.
4. It's importand to use the right "channel" here, because the channel corresponds with the per-voice "CustomX" modulator. We chose channel X="1" here. I recommend to set "Mute output" as well.
5. Setup of the Pitch modulation of (1). You can see that I chose "Custom1" here referencing the same channel we have selected in (4).
Result: Modualtor Signal is picked up by the GenCustomMod with channel 1. The picked up signal is then "beamed" over to per-voice modulator "Custom1".

You can really use any signal as modulator now. Why not experiment with
(a) a Filter between Carrier and GenCustomMod which smothes out the mod signal, or
(b) go crazy and put an delay between both ... or
(c) setup some crazy cross-modulation where the Carrier has a second GenCustomMod with channel "2" and send it over to the Modulator...
