Hi all,

Quick possibly dumb question that I was not able to find a definitive answer to while searching. I need a drum sequencer and am considering buying mDrummer, likely whenever it comes up in the sale. However, I noted that MSF let’s you load mDrummer (or parts of it) into MSF, which has me wondering whether I should be looking at MSF instead since it’s only a little more expensive but covers multiple other areas as well.

I have messed around with the MSF demo and admit it still very much confuses me, so I am not 100% whether all or just some of mDrummer’s functionality is in MSF. In particular, is there a way to get the rhythm generator and sequencing elements of mDrummer in MSF?

I'm not an MDrummer expert, don't own it, but I do have MSF and can confirm that you CAN open what looks to me like the full version of MDrummer inside it. (I've followed a few video demos of it and had no problems.) All the sample content for MDrummer can be downloaded, too. So as far as audio is concerned, definitely YES. Including access to all the Melda FX such as MXXX for processing its output…

The trick is to open it in the FX grid in MSF where the full version is an option, rather than the Gen grid, where only parts of MDrummer are available, as you can see in these screen grabs:

I haven't tried this, but I do know you can get MIDI out from MSF when using its arpeggiator, so maybe you can also get MIDI out when running Mdrummer in it, too?

I have tried loading the MDrummer vst demo and can definitely get MIDI out from that, fwiw…

There probably are some things you can do with the full version that are logistically not possible when using it inside MSF, but I have no idea what those might be. But plenty can be done inside MSF, plus you have MSF itself, which is incredible, and it doesn't come inside MDrummer:)

That is fantastic -- I just tried it in the way you suggest, and it worked great. Well, that answers the question for me...MSF it is!

Thank you!

I agree with David's assessment above, but just to elaborate a bit:

MDrummer inside MSF does have several limitations but probably not deal breakers.

You don't get the 16 outs. (Although you can have 4 outs by using MDRUMMER4OUT inside MSF6OUT.) But you probably don't need multi-outs because inside MD you have all the FX you'll ever need per drum.

MDrummer-outside has it's own settings and menu buttons...quite a few things there that can't be done in MD-inside:
E.G.
Input MIDI filter. Output MIDI filter (handy for re-mapping to other drum programs).
Analyse and import sample library (that's a special thing), but don't worry, you can still drop external samples onto pads.
Multi sample generator (A utility for slicing acoustic drum recordings and builing mult-samples from them.) Again, don't worry, you can still import bunches of samples and create multi layered drums.
And more,
but they're really icing on the cake extra things that you could well not need.

There's no limitations when it comes to the main functionalty > Drums, Rhythms and Generating.
I'd say it's a no brainer to get MSF,
then get MDrummer later on if you feel you really need/want it. Great to have both of course!
