Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster. I just watched the modulation tutorials on the Melda website, and they were intensely "Mathsy" (not a disparagement, I am a maths guy myself). So, I am interested, how many of the regular posters here have a background in the mathematical sciences? Do you think that influences your affinity towards these clearly very nerdy plugins?

I too just watched the modulation tutorials and didn't find them overly mathy. Though my math training is limited, I do often find myself applying what little I know to things like simplifying the audio frequency chart, small room acoustics, and other practical things.

There definitely seems a lot on offer here for math people, though.

Absolutely. I'm a maths teacher in my normal life, and fitting those graphs to one another is something that high school kids find a lot of difficulty with.
Maybe you have absorbed these skills through your sound based explorations?

Hm, you don't have to understand everything. You more you know about music and acoustic theorie, you more you know whats going on. Sometime I think, and yeah, thats sounds nice, don't know what he is talking about, but he knows what he said. I try it myself, okay a, now while i do it myself (haha) I understand, why I doing what I'm doing.
But Math is cool, my brain like to think, sometimes.

I like this approach, and honestly, that's how most people do maths, especially unfamiliar maths. You step your way into a problem by messing with it, until you gain a more systematic understanding, at which point you can extend the original ideas. I think a lot of people here would be very good at those kinds of explorations.

I'd say I'm on high scholl level ... just forgot too many things from my university time. I did a FFT iFFT C-Programm back in the 90ties, but still that helps to understand that frequency + phase thing...
Bringing me to an important topic: All of "music" is math. The frequency ratios of octave, 5ths, 4ths and so forth. The harmonic series. Interacting waveforms wiping each other out or amplyfiying themselves ... rhythm patterns.

I think you're absolutely right. I guess by "mathsy" I'm describing a way of thinking about/interacting with music or sound, rather than any specific mathematical calculation.
And yes, it always does.

I can see how hs students could struggle. That might be due to their nascent skill base. I feel like once algebra meets spatial reasoning, that gives you enough to be functional with modulators. These things are probably related to the development of the prefrontal cortex which is immature in adolescents.

Listening skills and an enriching environment are also factors.
