Hi everyone.
I found this example of running MainStage 3 instruments such as Alchemy via Pro Tools and wondered if the same was possible using Waveform.
I have got as far as setting up the audio so I can hear it from MainStage and record the midi notes in Waveform but stuck on playback so I can hear and record audio.
Suggestions to make it work fully as in the video?

What is the problem you are running into?

Hi fde101.
I'm having problems with the routing.
I'm recording midi fine and I'm getting sound when playing keyboard so that part is working.
What I'm having problems with is the actual playback of the recorded midi and the recording of audio.
I want to rout the midi track back to MainStage on playback and record the audio to another track in Waveform.
I'm missing something here.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Mark.

Do you have soundflower (or alternatively Loopback) installed and does it appear in the list of audio interfaces you can select from in the software?

This would be selected for "Input" on the "Audio Devices" area of the "Settings" tab in Waveform, and for "Audio Output" on the "Audio" tab of Preferences in MainStage (MainStage -> Preferences -> Audio).

If you installed Soundflower but do not see it in the list of audio devices, make sure you approved the kernel extension in the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences (on the General tab) - if the option is not there you may need to rerun the installer first as it disappears after some amount of time.

Note that I have not been able to get Soundflower working on my Mac, and as it is a kernel extension it may not continue to work on future versions of macOS as Apple is phasing those out. Loopback is not free (costs money outside of trial mode), but I could get it working quite easily on my Mac.

It is also possible to configure Loopback to work with FL Studio, Cubase and Reason, which I don't think would be possible to do in a sane manner using Soundflower (the reason being that in those DAWs you can only select one audio device which is used for both input and output, so it creates a feedback loop if used "normally" - but Loopback has some functionality that can get around this). Other DAWs with a similar restriction may also benefit from that functionality.

For Loopback, it should prompt you to set up "ACE" the first time you run it - if you haven't run the app yet you will need to do so to set that up and the interface will be named "Loopback Audio" in the list of audio devices.

Will look into this.

Found a free, easy to use solution for this called GroundControl and it works well. https://www.gingeraudio.com
