Waveform Newbie. Basic Dumb Question !!

Hi,
I realize this is a different type of tool from a score writer but I want to do something which I feel is a basic function and I cannot figure it out and that is to input notes directly from my midi keyboard into a channel where myplay line is just like I can do with my mouse without starting the record function.

Keyboard is working fine and I have an instrument loaded so I have audio.

I can place notes into the channel using the mouse at the playline but not with the keyboard

Is this possible?
