I'm a youtube junkie so these are the youtube channels I watch. Yes I know there is a lot, but what's that they say about variety? Actually I used to follow more than this but I've cut down a bit. I have lots of guitar related PDF's as well that I occasionally refer to, and I found one of the best guitar tab links ever recently so I guess I'm going to be busy for some time to come.

I know you are probably not a great youtube fan Vurt, but Travis on 'Move Forward Guitar youtube channel has some really good videos on guitar theory, his guitar theory teaching method is by far the easiest to understand i have come across, and believe me I have watched a lot of theory videos that I just could not get my head around. It may be worth your while checking pootube out one last time.vurt wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 6:38 pm i did try a few on pootube a few years back, david walliman (iirc) was one i remember seeming quite interesting with modes and such.
it was at this point, i realised my main weakness was it seemed most guitar tutors were speaking a foreign language
watching the fingers, totally understandable! but years of self teaching or picking up bits from other self taught players, i have absolutely no vocabulary to speak of.
i did enjoy steve stine though, bit of a glam rocker, but seems like a nice guy, but also speaks 'rock!'
never done a paid course, but did follow his basic theory for guitarists, as despite playing guitar for many years, and having a decent although far from extensive understanding of theory, id never managed to align it to the guitar neck, as all my theory lessons had been on piano

I'm happy to pay for courses if they are good. I did the Justin Beginner Course for free, then paid for his Intermediate Foundation. I also just bought a lifetime sub to his Music Theory course for $99.
I also have a few Celtic style guitar TrueFire courses paid for, but haven't started them yet.

The thing for me is - is the quality on paid courses higher than the stuff you can learn for free on YT?

Depends on the coursework / branding / price. Take TrueFire. Yes you can view all the stuff they offer for free.. But when you buy the course you also get interactive sheet music with a backing track to work out your material. It's a very high gloss production.
On the cheap but not free side if you get something like https://www.99centguitarlessons.com/index.html
Yes it's an old web design but it gets the job done and the prices are reasonable. It includes a downloadable pdf and video breakdown. But lacks the interactive format of truefire.
It's not about a full course work just individual lessons
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fAs0XjEVOc
Sandra Sherman does very in-depth lessons on YT. So much so that you might not want to purchase the tab. Nonetheless I find that having the pdf or gpro available makes for a good follow up where you want to memorize the content without watching the video once you have the basics down. These vids are a great introduction to fingerstyle using a method that's straight ahead/easy yet impressive when you are able to pull it all together.

Jake Reichbart does highly in-depth dvd videos that span over an hour for each song. He leaves no stone unturned. That being said he just got guitar pro to transcribe work so you don't get transcriptions with his older stuff.

Here's a thing I can't stress enough...
Learn chord-melody (anything)
There is nothing like having a real band (for better or worse) to play songs with. After that you are left with backing track and building songs bit by bit in daws. If you want to play songs and more importantly play songs in front of others you can fill in the other parts with fingerstyle guitar. While you may love learning a lick or two and showing them off it's not as satisfying as playing a whole song.
Chord melody can be played with just a pick, hybrid (pick and fingers) fingerstyle and tap plus fingerstyle (Stanley Jordan) I play them all because in some instances I can get around pretty good will most of them (though sometimes I struggle with classical right hand form). The reason why I do is that some songs work better with certain methods and others require the full range of fingerstyle.

Youtube videos tend not to be set in order, so for example if you are a beginner there is usually no advice as to what order to watch the videos in. Also any Ebook or PDF lessons tend not to be free.jonasbbech wrote: ↑Mon Dec 28, 2020 12:17 pm The thing for me is - is the quality on paid courses higher than the stuff you can learn for free on YT?
I think as long as you are not a complete beginner you can probably find everything you need for free on youtube and other free stuff on the internet like PDF''s ect.

Past a certain point of development you don't need video aids. Though written documentation is required. Before the internet I remember Berklee having mail order classes. They sent to the learning material and you were required to return a cassette of your performance every week. The instructor would then grade you on performance. Which is the type of education that you can't get with videos or written work. Honest fair educated critique of your performance can teach you in ways online lessons free or paid cannot. Mostly it can inspire you to do your best.
That being said if you are simply after the material there is more out there on the sheet/guitar pro side that people aren't aware of.
The late Bill Tyers would arrange and transcribe all of his covers to tab format and print them to pdf format.

I'm seriously thinking of downloading all of his pdfs and hosting them elsewhere as he's passed away his hosting agreement will eventually be terminated.

Not much, but I have bought Fareed Haque's Jazz Comping Survival Guide and John Finn's Modal Rock Soloing. Both seem pretty good but it is taking me a while to get through them as I have so much other guitar practice I want to do.

Martin Goulding has some free lessons, he also has Guitar World videos on YT.lfm wrote: ↑Thu Dec 03, 2020 5:12 pm I got Petrucci's course and Chris Brooks, started looking at some YT but got books too.
Getting more into sweep picking, various tremolo bar techniques.
More of tapping and such.
All things that make you spend more time with the guitar neck.
It's so cheap and if just one thing stay with you long term it's worth it.
It all favours being more fluent in the end....

Troy Stetina's books are great for metal and rock techniques.

I thought the same today, someone passing on what they have learned could have saved me years. I bought books and CDs pre-internet,melvinloewe wrote: ↑Wed Dec 16, 2020 11:09 pm Have never paid for or used courseware to learn guitar. To be honest, I’m not sure if courses would have helped me get to where I am faster though. I think some people (myself included) prefer to not learn through courses and lessons, for better or worse.
