Should Bitwig take Ableton 11 as an example?

Hello Bitwiggers,
When Ableton 11 was announced, I wondered if there were some features that were long overdue for Bitwig. Since Bitwig has been focusing on sound design and modulation for quite some time now, wouldn't it be time to bring composition back to the fore? Especially comping or the possibility to set scales for midiclips are promising.
The Capture Midi function is also very practical, as the record button is often not activated while playing around and having good ideas.

I would like comping. I don't care at all about scales in midi clips and would never use them. I also use Logic which has the Capture Midi function and I welcome that feature, but maybe I would only actually make use of it once every couple months. I'm in the habit of using record so it is not that important to me.
I want to see Bitwig keep developing in the direction of sound design and modulation. There is still plenty of stuff to do there to add to what are already some pretty unique capabilities. I'd like a Midi Grid device. An MSEG modulator. A midi device for adjusting curves of incoming modulations. User created UI's (like Polymer) for Grid presets. Etc. Etc.

It is more about combining the two worlds and less about replacing one with the other.

If we are combining stuff from 2 DAW's, I would rather Bitwig and Logic than Bitwig and Live.nortle wrote: Wed Dec 09, 2020 10:41 pmIt is more about combining the two worlds and less about replacing one with the other.

I actually never use the record button for MIDI anymore.pdxindy wrote: Wed Dec 09, 2020 10:30 pm I'm in the habit of using record so it is not that important to me.
Yes. But when it's lacking too many features of a DAW it's 'only' a modular environment that you can't use in another DAWpdxindy wrote: Wed Dec 09, 2020 10:30 pm I want to see Bitwig keep developing in the direction of sound design and modulation. We're talking about features that just about any DAW has, now (well, when 11 is released) even Live. And with 11 I use Bitwig less than before.
What's really missing in Bitwig (and Live) is better (well, usable) mixing.
_Way_ too many missing features, Live is at least somehow realistic.pdxindy wrote: Wed Dec 09, 2020 11:11 pm If we are combining stuff from 2 DAW's, I would rather Bitwig and Logic than Bitwig and Live.
But if you ask me, I'd combine Bitwig and Pro Tools, Samplitude or Mixbus - to get something usable for mixing.

Comping and Capture MIDI are not unique to Live, Logic and DP have had both of those features for years.
Where everyone should copy Live though is with MIDI comping, as far as I know Live might be the only ones to do that? There are no new ideas under the sun, Ableton didn't come up with the idea of MIDI comping people have been asking for that feature for years.
There is nothing wrong with asking for features from other DAWs, but if you think a bunch of Bitwiggers are going to approve of a post where you insinuate Live is to be followed, you will get negative feedback.

I'd like to see the instant recall of parameters that Live has several methods to accomplish, like the new Macro snapshots, or something like Kapture in Max4Live. Bitwig needs some of that.

I moved from Live to Bitwig because I like the direction Bitwig was going and still do. However, I would like to see a little more focus on composition. I trust them though and look forward to V4!

Well I wish I had that power.machinesworking wrote: Thu Dec 10, 2020 12:03 am There is nothing wrong with asking for features from other DAWs, but if you think a bunch of Bitwiggers are going to approve of a post where you insinuate Live is to be followed, you will get negative feedback.

Bitwig UI is the best for me and will use it regardless of any changes but enhanced comping would help me providing its user friendly, we are all unique and find our own creative process whatever that may be.

I would like Bitwig to focus more on actual DAW features and less on sound design. Or make a VST version of Bitwig so it can be used in another DAW that's more focused on arranging and mixing.

I thought Bitwig was created by programmers who previously worked for Ableton and who did follow Ableton's design in some ways, along with innovating and making some great features (how modulation is done, the Grid, and so on). Still, given this background, I wouldn't expect the Bitwig developers to just look at Ableton to see what to do next. They have their vision, their timelines, and they must regularly look at what all of their competitors are doing.
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

Bitwig is not lacking any basic DAW functions. It can host VST's. It can record audio and midi. It can edit audio and midi. It can arrange those recordings into a composition and it can export the results.ReleaseCandidate wrote: Wed Dec 09, 2020 11:23 pmYes. So no, it is not just a modular environment, it's a DAW.
If it suits your needs/wants or not is up to you.

You will never get everything that everybody wants in one DAW. By the time you get that 'must have' feature from one DAW they will have added more new must have stuff you don't have! I didn't even know things like 'Retrospective Midi Record' existed until a few years ago, now apparently they are must have!
X32 Desk, i9 PC, S88MK3, S1, BWS, Live + PUSH 3, Osmose, RedShift 6 Pro3, Tempera, Syntakt, Digitone II, OP1-F, OPXY, Eurorack, TD27 Drums, Guitars, Basses, Amps and of course lots of pedals!
