Idea: Handling the signals BELOW the threshold in a dynamic plugin

Hi!
I'm just sitting at the breakfast table without a computer and remember that I once build a limiter/loudnesstreatment, that pushed the signals below threshold instead of dealing with the ones above threshold... It had the advantage of very natural transients for loud impulses I think.

Is that Idea allready implemented in the Melda dynamic devices somewhere? Letting the signals above the threshold through without compression or expansion, but doing that on the signals below the threshold makes sense or do I miss something in 'my' logic?

Hi, well, there is a switch for upwards compression in MDynamics for example, and you can paint your custom curves in there, but I personally don't like that, since it amplifies the "nonsense in the bottom".

It seems like the MultiBand Leveling Crossover might be what you're after? MDynamicsMB here...

That's what I was thinking. Compress the "quiet" band, and boost its output. Turn on the Gate too.

MCompressor, and most of the other Melda compressors can do this.
Here I have MCompressor, with "Custom shape" turned on:

* The two red x's are points where no boost or attenuation happen.
1.) Below about -40 db input, this curve acts as a gate.
2.) Between -40db and -12 db, the signal is boosted.
3.) Above -12db, the signal is attenuated.

So here we have a gate to get rid of unwanted noise, a boost of quiet
(but not too quiet) sounds, and regular compression.
