I’ve been experimenting with multiparameters and the Replace function recently, and thought it might be a good idea to share the results, so here are a couple of simple presets.

As ever, I'm trying to replicate some of the features of Mobius Looper. The idea here was to find a way of quickly replacing parts of a loop on a track that is not currently active. So, for example, one use might be as follows:
  • Record a simple loop into Track 1
  • Record a simple loop into Track 2
  • Start playing another part on Track 3 (not recording)
  • On pedal press, replace into Track 1
  • On pedal release, return to Track 3
And that’s exactly what this very basic preset does:

Code: Select all

Please note, this is a little bit hacky, since I’m still not very good at setting up these multiparameters. I was having a bit of trouble getting it to return to Track 3 when the pedal was released. It seemed that inverting the 3rd parameter inside the multiparameter would make it work, but it would only work once, after which it would keep getting stuck on Track 1 (I still have no idea why this is). My fix was to create another multiparameter named “Inversion Fix” that simply toggles the Invert option on parameter 3 of my main multiparameter. Triggering both of these multiparameters using on/off mode, from the same MIDI controller produces the desired results. The preset is currently configured to do this from MIDI note 41, or F2.

In order to replace into or return to different tracks, simply edit whichever track is selected via the first and last parameters within the multiparameter. The last parameter is the track that you replace into when note F2 is pressed, and the first parameter is the track you return to upon releasing it.

After making that preset, I figured it would be much better to set up a couple of sliders, in order to choose the destination and return tracks for the Replace command. So that’s what this “improved” version does:

Code: Select all

Again, the logic behind this preset is pretty convoluted/nonsensical, since I got to the end result through pure trial-and-error. This time I was having trouble getting it to return to the desired track (it just kept going back to Track 4, no matter where I set the “Return To” slider). So, I just routed that multiparameter through another fix button which inverted the parameter and it now seems to work! If anyone has the skills to tidy up this preset, I’d love to know where I was going wrong :clown:

In order to make this work on more than 4 tracks, all you’d need to do is edit the Max values on the “Replace Into” and “Return To” multiparameters, and then the sliders will go to higher values.

Here’s a really rough example of the preset in action, in case I’ve not yet made obvious what it does. Please excuse the hastily assembled riffs, recycled drums and suspect timing!

In the video above, I’ve just recorded two very simple 2-bar loops into Tracks 1 and 2. About 45 seconds in the replacing starts, tapping pedal 2 (note 41 / F2) to replace some tremolo picking into the gaps between the single notes playing on Track 2. Then I set the slider to replace into Track 1 and splice some random parts of another riff onto that track. The rest of the video just continues that process, alternating between replacing on Tracks 1 and 2 until both contain a glitchy assortment of chopped-up guitar parts.

It’s not the best example, but hopefully it gives one idea of how you might create an evolving/developing piece of music from just two loop tracks and a minimal number of overdubs. I’m sure someone much cleverer than me would be able to combine this preset with some square-wave modulators to make the replacing happen in a more synchronised or rhythmical fashion too.

amazing what can be done with multiparameters!
