Sometimes when a new main version is released it is only compatible to a certain degree in the past. Eg, MuLab 8 can only open projects and presets of MuLab 4 and up, MuLab 9 can only open projects and presets of MuLab 8. These tools are handy to upgrade (=resave with a higher version) existing project and preset files. Does this answer your question?
