Logic 10.3.3
When using MXXX as a MIDI controlled instrument, MSoundFactory (or MPowerSynth) modules produce sound as submodules. If they are nested one level deeper though (inside MXXX or Modular submodules), I get no sound.
MXXX <--- MSF <--- OSC = sound
MXXX <--- Modular <--- MSF <--- OSC = no sound
MXXX <--- MXXX <--- MSF <--- OSC = no sound
MXXX <--- Modular <--- OSC produces sound, but tha's just an untriggered always-on oscillator, so it seems the issue is not with sound sources per se, but with the MIDI triggering.

Found it. Right click on the modular submodule, and there's an option to enable MIDI that's disabled by default. I felt like such an option must exist for modules like PowerSynth to even be an option in modular options like ModularEX that cannot exist as parents.

Yes, this option is disabled by default, since otherwise some odd behaviour may occur in some cases for modules, which follow MIDI, but you wouldn't expect them to
