MIDI typing - toggle automatically adding notes to clip

I'm new to Waveform and cannot get my head around how sometimes you can MIDI type (just using qwerty keyboard) to test some chords. But sometimes it insist on adding notes whenever a press a key. I'm not recording or anything. I presume there is some kind of toggle somewhere, at least there should be so I can control if I'm just testing or want to add notes. Sometimes when typing I hear the plugin/VST instrument for one track, but the notes get added to clip on different track (with different plugin/instrument)...doesn't make sense to me at all. Someone care to explain to me how this works?

Figured it out. Step was selected in the piano roll toolbar.
