Send specific track(s) to different physical audio devices?

Hey - checking out Waveform, it looks really good!

My question is whether you can set (say) track 1 to go to the mac's speakers, and track 2 to bluetooth headphones. Is it possible to set individual *physical* output destinations like this?

Thanks!

hi
no, i think it's hard to implement, they will be out of sync, different samplerates and buffers

You can set a Destination for each track, but only to a device that has registered as an audio device with your Waveform. I believe.

Like pretty much most audio software, Waveform can only be configured to use a single specified audio device type, and, depending on that type, either a single specified device for input and a single specified device for output, or a single specified device for both input and output.

Generally those devices are 'real', but if it was a 'virtual' device which aggregated multiple separate real devices, then yes, you could do what you're asking.

On MacOS, I believe those kinds of aggregate devices are already a feature.

On Windows, you would need 3rd-party software (ASIO4All might work).

Thanks to everyone for the replies! I'm trying out Rogue Amoeba's Loopback, which lets me create virtual devices and say where they go, so that should do it.

If you have a multi-output audio interface, you can route tracks to different individual outputs on that device.

Only tenuously on topic, I have an interface (that'll only run on 32-bit) with 8 outputs. I've a plan to connect the outputs in four pairs to four different hifi amp/speaker set-ups each in its own corner of a room, with any listener being in the centre, the idea being, by using lots of short clips, to give the impression of sound whirling around a room. Using sloping automation lines, I reckon I can change the sounds from L to R for each amp.

Has anyone tried anything remotely similar?

Yup, every year or three I have to help a student who wants to do something like this, and while it wont be as easy as eg a plugin that can pan a source across 8 channels, it can be done.

(Usually the harder part for us is actually the playback at exhibition point, as running a full DAW isnt usually viable, and media players, including hardware media playetrs etc generally only play stereo files. )

edit : if you mean has someone done this in Waveform or Tracktion, though, sorry, not specifically that.

Interesting, thank you. I'm thinking of having tracks in sets of four playing consecutive clips of the same sound, and moving the balance across each pair of speakers. Inevitably messy, but potentially interesting. As for audience, I'm not aiming to go public, but just having me or someone sit in a chair in the middle of the speakers, with eyes closed (or blindfold added) to concentrate the hearing.
