Is it at all possible to copy a single clip from an existing project into a fresh one?

Yes, you can use cut and paste.

1. Open your new project.
2. From the Projects tab, open your old project so that both projects are open at the same time.
3. As Stuttaton said, select the clip from the old project, copy (or cut).
4. Switch to the new project and paste.
This might be over-simplifying it, but when I started in T6, I didn't initially realize you could open two projects at the same time without any problems at all.
