What can be done with a Step Clip?

The user guide instructs me to 1) drag & drop a step clip from the Search panel into a vacant track then 2) right-click in the track and select "Insert New Step Clip." This makes no sense to me if I have already dropped the clip into the track. Still, I follow the steps faithfully; but nothing appears in the track, and playback of the track from the beginning is silent. I tried to follow some tutorials on Youtube on the topic for v11.5, but they seem to be using another program.

I can play the steps clips listed in the panel, but that is all I can do with them. Is it possible to load a Step clip into a track for editing?

Yes, you can load a step clip into a track for editing. When you drag and drop the clip icon from the to right of the screen it should automatically ask what kind of clip you want; as you say, no need to right click. If the clip isn't appearing try selecting the track by clicking on the track header before drag and dropping the clip; sometimes Waveform needs some help telling it where to insert things.

Thanks for lending a hand.

Right-clicking in the track brings up the same menu, so I do not see why it is necessary to drag the "+" icon (as a white frame) into the track. But I followed your suggestion. I even tried the steps in a new track. The name of any Step Clip I drop into the track does appear in the heading of the panel below, but nothing but a red frame appears in the track, and playback is silent. Below are the steps I tried. Perhaps someone can point out what I am overlooking.

1. Drag & drop the "+" icon at top right into a track, which will appear as a white frame. After dropping the frame into the track, a menu will appear -> select "Insert Step Clip." The white frame will change to red.

2. Click in track header to make double-sure it is selected.

3. Select a Step Clip in the Search Results panel at top left then drag & drop it into the red frame in the track. The title of the clip will appear in the header of the panel below the track.

Maybe I need a pro version of Tracktion to make these steps functional?

You don't need Tracktion Pro - step clips work with the free version.

A couple of thoughts:
- If you are searching for an existing step clip in the Browser, you don't need to insert a blank step clip first. Just drag the clip from the browser onto the track.
- Not being funny but you have got a VI inserted on the track, haven't you? The step clip is only MIDI so without a VI like MicroDrum Sampler, you won't get any sound.

Djard, Can you follow this? https://ibb.co/M2BFVYq

The video solved the problem for me. That I have to drop the VI into the narrow space between the border of the track and the volume control was a revelation. The section in the so-called user guide makes no mention of the location. Why manuals are written for folks who don't need them is a mystery to me.

Thanks to all for the valuable help.
