Should I upgrade or buy new.

Just curious if anyone has any thoughts on this.
I have downloaded the trial version of waveform12.
I already have waveform 11.5 with lots of plugins, including essentials, and collective.
What would give me the least issues with plugins and such
Upgrading my waveform11 to 12, or just purchasing the demo.
I know upgrading is cheaper, but I fear crashing issues.
Right now I can run both programs independently of each other.
Maybe I should purchase 12 and have both versions.
Although I'm guessing I should probably delete the trial version before upgrading 11.
I don't know.

Personally I would just upgrade to 12, for performance and new features as well as a lot of bug fixes [ not forgetting the sale on at the moment ] . Make a back up of your existing songs and keep them separate as once you have opened and saved a project in 12 it won't open again in 11.5
Regarding your understandable fear of a new update crashing what you have working good now can be seen as a gamble I guess, but crashes are taken very seriously by the Devs.
.
You can always revert back to installing version 11.5 or any older version from your account downloads section if you are having problems for some reason, but in my experience from only using waveform from version 8 any major problems I had were always fixed quickly.
I'm just speaking from my own perspective, I never keep older versions of software hanging around when a new version is released, so maybe wait on a few more people to chime in here with their take on this

I don't understand. When you purchase the upgrade to Waveform 12 you don't have to get rid of Waveform 11. I have versions 6, 7, 9, 11, and 12 all installed at the same time and I have purchased only upgrades since version 1.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

The ONLY difference between upgrading and buying new will be that you spend an extra fifty dollars buying new.
[W10-64, T5/6/7/W8/9/10/11/12/13, 32(to W8)&64 all, Spike],[W7-32, T5/6/7/W8, Gina16] everything underused.

I went with the upgrade.
I was just worried 12 would actually upgrade my current program.
It turns out the upgrade is a separate program from waveform 11 anyway, and that's a good thing for me.
Waveform 12 can only open about 10% of my waveform 11 edits without crashing. It's always because of plug ins.
I now have my waveform 11 projects in a separate folder so I can still access them and they open no problem with 11.
Kind of a hassle, but it works.
There is no problem in 12 with new projects for me.
Just can't open waveform 11 edits with much success.
This is one of the reasons I stayed with version 11.5.17. When I upgraded to the last version before 12, the plugins kept crashing. I reverted back to the previous version, the problem stopped, and stayed with it.

Are there problems in 12 when you create a new project and then load the same plugins that cause the crashes when loading the projects from 11?
I've found 12 more stable than 11, so I'm surprised to hear that there are plugins that work fine in 11 but crash 12.

All my plug ins seem to work fine in version 12, as long as it is not an original waveform 11 edit.
That's the weird part.
I can get them to load if I have the sandbox enabled, (it still takes a ridiculously long time to load, but the face plates won't display. I would have to rely on the lower user interface to adjust the plug ins.

Any kind of solution will probably require time spent testing things. For example, duplicate a WF11 edit that you know causes problems, open it in WF11 and delete one plugin. Try it in WF12. Keep doing that until it opens in WF12 without any issues and you'll know which plugin causes problems. That kind of thing.
It's still early, but I haven't come across anything similar and I haven't seen anyone else say they're having this kind of problem. As is usually the case, it's probably plugin-related.

There might be corruption in the XML of the file, which could happen if it was writing itself when the engine crashed.
I don't know how to edit Waveform's, but I know there are folks on this forum who can give directions that might help.

It seems to be random 3rd party plugins. And it can be any and all of them at any given instance.
When it crashes, the little crash notification pops up and tells me which plug in is crashing.
I've seen Izotopes Neutrino, Neutron
Waves ssl g compressor, Puigchild
D16 Frontier Limiter
Softtube Drawmer73
There are even more, but these are the ones I recall.
I'm not gonna worry about it too much anymore.
I will just keep my waveform 11 edits out of version 12.
I just do this for fun, so there is nothing that is exactly critical.
It can be frustrating though.
One thing I have not tried is clearing the plugin list and rescanning.
Thanks for all your input.
I appreciate it for sure.

Jules might offer you $5 for it, on a 3.5" floppy. That's the only known copy.

I have 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11. Can't run 3, tho, cause that motherboard died; so the license key won't work; and around that time Mackie released it and the licensing system "disappeared"...
7 and up are all still operational. Tricky, though, 'cause a number of those in the middle had both 32- and 64-bit versions.
