Question for our future: What's the best (supported) software for creating Plugins in OSX?

Official support for: sonicbirth.sourceforge.net

It seems that my hundreds of SonicBirth plugins will be a thing of the past soon, with Apple Silicon, etc looming..

Is there a platform that gives the capabilities of SonicBirth but is supported?

I looked at Max which has a "Gen" Module to output code but it's subscription based and expensive to buy outright..

What options are out there?

It's not totally excluded that, at some point, Antoine updates SonicBirth to make a universal (Intel & ARM) version. I have the source code for version 1.3.5 and a few months ago had a crack at it in Xcode. I had to abandon because compile errors kept coming and I didn't have a clue how to solve them. Anyway, I'm not totally bummed out by SonicBirth's future...

Great to hear...!

I really like SB, and have recently been working with a hardware specific development tool that is driving me crazy.. arbitrary limits on parameter values, antiquated rules for control signal vs audio processing (no mixed signal modules). Ugh.

Any thoughts on Max / Msp?

3 years later...

I've been running my SB plug-ins on an M2 mac successfully (for the moment!)

I'm running macOS 14.7 but am nervous about Updating to Sonoma (now that Tahoe has been released, I'd like to be only 1 OS behind).

Any news on the Sonic Birth front?

I have a macOS 10.14 virtual machine on a Mac Pro 2013 just to export SB plug-ins. And a macOS 12 virtual machine on my MacBook Pro M4 Pro just to use them. This is not very viable in the long term, but it works for now. If I remember correctly, my macOS 12 VM was because SB plug-ins didn't work in macOS 15: some needed OS resources are simply not there anymore.

The solution is of course to update and compile the Xcode SonicBirth project. I somewhat hope that using an AI assistant in Xcode could solve the various errors I'm getting when I try to update the project.

Similarly, I am running a MBP on macOS 10.14 to export SB plug-ins as AU components, which I manually install on my main studio (M2) mac.

Good luck with the Xcode project, sounds like a great idea, hope AI can help!

If you ever want to take a swing at it, I could provide you with the Xcode project.

I probably wouldn't know how to begin...
