Why is video so hard for Ableton on Windows

Hi all,

Is it just me or does Ableton s*ck a little when it comes to reading video on Windows? Every other app is able to use any system codec I install, but Ableton works for like a 5 minutes and then starts to show the "file may be corrupt or not licensed" error. I tried the recomanded Haali codecs that are not developed anymore. Those work for the most part, but mess support of some formats in other apps. When I install K-Lite, sometimes it starts working, sometime it doesn't. Or it stops working at will for some reason. Or it crashes when Albion is loaded in Kontakt upon opening.

Is it just my Windows install being so old, or do you have this issue as well?

Thanks,
Martin.

Ok. K-Lite + Haali splitter worked. This time. Vividly remembering it did not help a month ago. A different configuration did.

So what does it actually need? Which codec does it use? Interested as one who never has tried it..

Live uses Quicktime iirc ... works fine here on Windows 8.1

It used to support only Quicktime, but Apple killed that API with 64bit iTunes I believe. They probably extended that support to some other DirectX codec implementation, but it's very shaky. Sometimes Haali splitter works, but doesn't use LAVcodecs, sometime a vanila K-lite (LAV) codec install works. Two months back I had to de-install all my codecs and install Haali + ancient ffdshow ones. It seems to me like they are still tweaking something under the hood and it requires different workaround every time.

...which is sad, because the same thing in Reaper just works, no questons asked, no fiddling needed. It grabs the default system codec and just rolls with it.

Yeah quicktime is dead.

Ahh so Live is.. not changed to work with default Windows codecs? Thats bad. Then again I do have Premiere Pro...
