Hey everyone, Jan Morgenstern here. A week ago I mentioned in that other thread that I was working on a series of workshop videos on intermediate-to-advanced synth programming and synth-based sound design, and I'm super happy to announce that today, that project has gone live for real! You can now check out the pilot episode of Jan's Patchwork Corner, in which I take apart and recreate a soft synth pad sound from my library Zebra Elementals: ISLA in Zebra2, on YouTube:

A bit of background – I've been thinking about doing something like this for longer than I'd had the idea of designing sounds for other composers, so when I started creating commercial soundsets and offering them via my soundware label Treeswift Audio last year, it was clear from the get-go that I'd eventually have to give the synth workshop idea a whirl, too. The inspiration was quite simply to try and make the kind of tutorial that I'd have liked having around back when I got serious about programming synths myself. In this, it attempts to be pretty much the opposite of the kind of "step-by-step-walkthrough of which knobs to set where to get synth staple sound XY" that YouTube is ripe with; I'd much rather use the patches themselves as a springboard for a much more in-depth look at basic, intermediate, and advanced approaches to creating sounds that are truly your own. That's the idea, anyway – you let me know whether I'm making it work :D But an obvious consequence is that the videos are fairly long, especially compared to other YouTube tutorials; think "full podcast episode" rather than "bite-sized coffee break tidbit".

In case you're interested, I go into a bit more detail on the concept here:

So, yeah. If you're at all interested in getting up to speed on synth programming or (hopefully) broadening your background knowledge on synthesis techniques and theory, do give this one a spin! I'd be curious to hear what you think. Also, happy for any shares, obviously. The next episode is already in the works, with more on the way; all episodes will appear in the "Watch" section of our website, and you can if you want to be sure you won't miss a thing.

Enjoy!

Hi Jan! Excellent first episode, an hour well spent! I particularly liked the way you explained it in relation to how actual/real instruments work.

I'm humbled by the depth of my ignorance but elated and inspired by the knowledge I gained from watching the tutorial. Looking forward to futrure episodes. Subscribed.

Cheers, Trahast

Great work - the hour literally flew by, and I learned so much. I subscribed AND bought the 'Isla' soundset. Looking forward to the next instalment :)

Excellent stuff.

Loved the video. I thought the detail level was great. So many tutorials show what settings to do but not why to do them. Your explanations really helped to understand why you were doing things, as well as what.

Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the next episode.

Great stuff. Love the detailed approach. Keep it up that way!

As commented on the YT video as well, this is so informative and well-paced for me.

Please don't stop and don't change :)

Excellent.
In this world full of quick todo tuto for edm prod on Serum, finally came a long and meaningfull learning from the maker of my favorite soundset, using my favorite synth Zebra, and starting with one of my favorite goto pad patch.
I've learnt a lot, and I'm looking forward to watching the new épisode.
Thanks

Hey, thanks so much for the support and the kind words, that means a lot! I'm not gonna lie, I was very unsure if the format would fly at all – after all, everyone's telling you that anything above 20 minutes per episode is YouTube poison, so learning in the making of this thing that I'm apparently not great at short-form knowledge transfer freaked me out a bit to say the least. :p

No no no no no, keep it deep. That's very interesting, and it doesn't seem to be targeting any youtube influencer, does it ?

IMO, interesting content delivered in an engaging way can easily last an hour... whereas poor content and a boring presentation is too long at 3 minutes... while time might be ONE of the considerations to consider, to me that is not at all a hard and fast rule... I sure hope the classes my doctor went to didn't top out at 20 minutes :-)

Just watched the first episode: quite good and full of insights new to me. Please go on!

Soooooo when is the next episode planned?

Most of the footage except for 2 segments and intro/outro for E2 are recorded and edited, after that it's mostly down to final polish. Definitely before the end of the year, but probably after Christmas!
