When a biz loses their best coders, what's next for their old code?

So much anxt about the market's various older plugins never being updated, I don't know, but I assumed it's because the main coder(s) moved on, and it's not cost-effective for their replacements to work their way into someone elses code, then also considering if possible future sales would even justify such efforts.
From a pro quality coders perspective, how hard is it to join and extend someone else's prior work?
What are the main variables that are considered?
Cheers

why is this being asked in the u-he forum? seems a narrow scope for a question like that.

Depends. Did he produce spaghetti-code, how well did he documentate and so on.glokraw wrote: Mon Jan 23, 2023 2:43 pm From a pro quality coders perspective, how hard is it to join and extend someone else's prior work?
Concerning u-he: Maybe Urs can give some hints how his developers are being forced to stay in the company...

Not U-he related.
It can happen that releasing something new is more profitable on the short term than spending time on maintenance. This is not only a question of devs leaving as I see it.

yeah, great coder, im just glad they're leaving, given the whole "ill only come to work if i can wear nothing but a fez" and not to mention the random animal impressions in meetings.
that said, is always first to volunteer for overtime or office tidying.

There are experts at U-he, and of course they are free to respond or not.whyterabbyt wrote: Mon Jan 23, 2023 2:53 pm why is this being asked in the u-he forum? seems a narrow scope for a question like that.
Why would I ask this out in the peanut gallery? I can google for their diverse
non-expert opinions...

as a non expert though, id imagine, it's easier for a small company, larger companies with teams on products probably have more turnover, and lots of different coders per product, so untangling it may be worse if the team head leaves?
a smaller company, tends to respect it's staff a little more, as the boss sees them constantly so is part of the team too. this leads to a longer retention for staff, why leave a job for a few more euro/dollar/quiddage when i may also be treated like shite?

a firm in manc i worked for, had a pass for the imax top tier, we could use any time we wanted. the top bit includes free nachos with cheese, soft drinks, quality street sweets and of course, salty or sweet popcorn.
if you want booze, you gotta pay!
so yes, in some cases, part of the way companies retain staff, can include popcorn.

I was in Manchester roughly 15 years ago the first time, walked down the city center and saw an advertising for topless trampolining. It was a mentally devastating discovery for a continental boy like I was. Never got this picture out of my head!vurt wrote: Mon Jan 23, 2023 9:58 pma firm in manc i worked for, had a pass for the imax top tier, we could use any time we wanted. the top bit includes free nachos with cheese, soft drinks, quality street sweets and of course, salty or sweet popcorn.

The smartest choice would be asking in the place where the largest number of developers hang out, ie the DSP and plugin developer forum.glokraw wrote: Mon Jan 23, 2023 7:02 pm Why would I ask this out in the peanut gallery? I can google for their diverse

If that's 'peanut gallery' and 'non-expert opinion' to you, though.... yeah well.
specifically asking about old unmaintained plugins and the like of a company that do maintain all their old products, though?

Well, surely the main problem is when giving new coders the old spaghetti code of the company founder.

Pretty sure it's better to ask the opinions of successful people...regardless of the topic.whyterabbyt wrote: Tue Jan 24, 2023 11:35 amThe smartest choice would be asking in the place where the largest number of developers hang out, ie the DSP and plugin developer forum.glokraw wrote: Mon Jan 23, 2023 7:02 pm Why would I ask this out in the peanut gallery? I have no experience with those other developers at kvr to acertain their credibility, and I never post or read those areas, as my time is stretched too thin already. I'm lucky to just plonk and pluk a few moments each day. This was just a simple question in passing. The peanut gallery reference is for the dodgy world outside the sacred bounds of kvr.
Cheers
