Wavetable randomization issue in MSoundFactory

This is totally new to me, so I used your question to teach myself about wavetable randomization. From the help list, I see the random button randomly chooses one of the wavetable presets.* After also getting 8, I manually selected at least 40 different wavetable presets. They had 8 samples. To me it makes sense that when we select a wavetable preset using the random button, if all of them have 8 samples, the number of samples in the wavetable would switch to 8. (But, see discussion below.)
*correction as noted below: The die button chooses one of the wavetable presets and the button with "Random" on it randomizes the waves.

Weird. For me, the wave count changes when I hit the 'Random' button. Although it lands on 256 most of the time. I'm using MSF V16.04.rtoip wrote: Sun Mar 05, 2023 6:58 pm If I press this one, then preset name does not change (default is set). Instead, samples are generated - but only (and always) 8![]()
Edit: That's the 'Random' button in the wavetable section. If I click the 'Random' button for the whole module at the top, the wave count varies a lot more.
Edit 2: I noticed that the 'Random' button at the top seems to select a random preset in the wavetable section, and I have a bunch of wavetable presets with varying lengths imported there. If you only have the default presets, you'll probably get 8 waves most of the time.

That's what I wrote initially before my edits:rtoip wrote: Sun Mar 05, 2023 8:24 pmThanks for info. I see. But what about random button (button with label "Random") in the section WaveTable at the bottom ? This one does not change preset (in the same section) but always generate exactly 8 samples. It does not take into account the setting with the slider above. It seems logical that the randomization should also take into account the number of samples, and it seems that this is a constant value.Held wrote: Sun Mar 05, 2023 8:05 pm Edit 2: I noticed that the 'Random' button at the top seems to select a random preset in the wavetable section, and I have a bunch of wavetable presets with varying lengths imported there. This button doesn't change the preset and randomizes the number of waves too for me. (You keep saying samples. Are we talking the same thing?)Held wrote: Sun Mar 05, 2023 8:05 pm Weird. You seem to expect the wave count to control the number of waves generated by the Random button. However, the Random button randomizes the wave count as well.
For me, the number of generated waves is mostly centered around 256, but goes lower occasionally.

It's weird that you always get 8. Which version are you using?

The random button also seems to generate random waves via the 'random' button you get when you click on a single wave whereas the dice only selects presets.rtoip wrote: Mon Mar 06, 2023 10:21 am Thus, the "Random" button is almost no different from the dice button in action.
It would be nice, if you could specify the number of waves you want via the waves count slider, though.

Just to clarify, I meant the button that was described here:rtoip wrote: Sun Mar 05, 2023 6:58 pm Yes, of course ... if you mean dice button. I rather mean button with text "Random" on it.
rtoip wrote: Sun Mar 05, 2023 11:48 am Below in the interface inside the wavetable section there is "Random" button.
Thanks for doing this experiment. I thought of creating some of my own presets with more than 8 waves to see what would happen.rtoip wrote: Mon Mar 06, 2023 10:21 am I just did an experiment. I added a new preset that has exactly 256 waves - all sine waves. I started pressing the "Random" button many times until finally 256 waves were generated - non-sine waves. Of course, the name of the preset has not changed, remaining as "Presets" label.
So it seems that the generator can only produce as many waves as there are in any existing preset - the "waves count" slider is still not taken into account
To test this I created some wavetable presets with more than 8 waves (20, 54, 72) and that's when the button would occasionally generate wavetable presets with more than 8 waves. Thanks for that tip.rtoip wrote: Mon Mar 06, 2023 10:21 am So it seems that the generator can only produce as many waves as there are in any existing preset - the "waves count" slider is still not taken into account So, in my case, the generator will never produce any number of waves other than 8 (all presets I had installed so far) or 256 (new test preset added).

The Random button respects the wave count slider now in the latest 16.05a beta. Yay!
[MSoundFactory] Random button in Wavetable module now creates random waves instead of loading a random preset.
