On launching Waveform, I can only hear my keyboard while recording (at first)...

Hi folks,
Can anyone tell me why I have to be recording before I can hear my midi keyboard, immediately after I launch Waveform 12? (I've tried with a couple of different synth plugins.) After a while, I can hear myself playing while not recording, but it takes a few minutes before this happens. Is this normal?

Thank you.

It doesn't sound normal and it doesn't happen for me. It's probably something that you are doing that you are not describing (or noticing.) The obvious thing is the "Enable Input Monitoring" setting for a MIDI device. If it's enabled, you should be able to hear what you are playing when you have a MIDi device set on a track that has an instrument plugin on it. If it's disabled, you should only hear what you're playing while you're recording.

Another place to look is Settings -> Advanced -> Audio Engine -> "Run audio engine when stopped"

If these things are happening without you doing anything to make them happen, it might be ghosts.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

There's obviously an open mic somewhere attached to the system.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

Thank you for the replies. It might have been a bad connection somewhere, because it seems ok now.
