Keyboard - Yamaha DGX 660
OS on Laptop: Windows 11
Waveform version: 12 Pro

I've gone through the startup tutorials, and got the midi setup. Interestingly, recommendations for using ASIO weren't successful. When I selected that for the audio, no input or output devices showed up. So I set that to Windows audio and set the devices on the laptop as output and input. The Yamaha did not show up here.

I did get the Yamaha to show up when I created the midi devices. It shows Portable Grand for in/out puts.

I see the meters show receipt of the keystrokes, and hearing my voice.

I tried setting the Tracks to Portable Grand . But when I record, I see the green meter show something is coming in, but nothing records. So I tried setting it to Input 1, and it does record, but not via midi from the keyboard. It records what the microphone picks up.

The Yamaha has some midi commands, one of which is Initial Setup, which is supposed to be executed right after starting recording. I did that, and it records....but not the midi. As noted, it is recording what the microphone picks up.

On some videos I watched, (not on Waveform), there needed dto be a midi track created, then record. I tried that, but that track gets ignored and the recording creates its own track.

Not sure what I'm missing.

Any suggestions?

Have you record armed the track ?

Make sure you have not got the "punch" button enabled in the bottom right hand corner set of options. If it is set then the recording will only work between the in and out markers. I had a frustrating half an hour before realising I had inadvertently enabled "punch" while switching off the click track.

When you're asking for help I think the most important thing you can do is ignore the part of your brain that says, "this detail is too obvious to mention" because that's usually the detail that allows other to know your situation. I have no experience with a Yamaha DGX 660. Does it output MIDI? Does it output audio? Does it output both? Does it use 1/4" cables? Does it use MIDI cables? Does it use USB to send MIDI and/or audio? Does it have its own ASIO driver? If not, have you installed ASIO4All?

MIDI inputs can be set to "monitor input from this device but don't actually record" which is baffling and somehow people habe their input set to that and wonder why nothing is recording.

Settings -> MIDI Devices -> (select input device) -> Action

If you have the MIDI input selected at the left and it is armed and the Action is set to actually record and you press record, then any MIDI sent to that input should record onto that track.
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Have you installed the midi drivers for your device?

Yes, my experience with Yamaha products is the drivers are key.
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.
