Is it safe to open 11 projects in 12 to see if they work?

I'm positive this has been covered before, but my attempts at search terms weren't getting good results, and with so many new ppl upgrading this week, it seems appropriate to have a post about this.

All my work has been in 11 Pro. Now I have 12 Pro. Is it safe to open those projects in 12 to check if they work before saving, or should we be saving duplicate backup versions of every 11 project before attempting to open in 12?

What's the best way to make this transition?

If its important, back it up first. I haven't really tested it but once you open a project in a new version there's a warning that it won't open in older versions. And there's the risk that something that works in an older version might be broken in a newer update, or just incompatible.

If you open it in WF12 and don't save it, it should be fine. You might want to turn off autosave just to be safe. And backing it up makes it even safer.
Surely there must be consensus by now...
