Any tips on downloading and installing TW? (Things got messy, last time!)

Hi all. I'm not terribly familiar with TW, having only used it a handful of times. I love TW! However, the last time I downloaded and installed it (on my old PC), things didn't work out as neatly as I would have liked... I downloaded the installer to a folder I used solely for installers. I might have missed something, but TW seemed to assume that this was the folder I wanted to use as the default folder for TW projects. The result was that my first few projects got shuffled in amongst hundreds of unrelated files. I also remember wondering where all of the related TW 'work-in-progress' files (individual tracks etc) had been stored. I seem to recall finding a lot of TW stuff on my C: drive, which I like to reserve mainly for the Windows OS and related system stuff.
Did I miss something, during the setup process, I wonder?
This time, I would like TW to avoid using my C: drive in any way, especially in any way that can eat up a lot of space. Ideally, I'd like to install TW on my D: drive and have a folder on my spacious E: drive for ALL of my TW project data, with separate subdirectories for each project. Then everything will be kept well organized, as I do project after project. Any tips or insights would be appreciated!

I don't think Waveform has a projects folder. You can save wherever you like and Waveform will assume the same place for the next time you create a new project, but you're not required to keep to that folder. Just choose another.
Tracktion (not just Waveform) saves its various things in a variety of places. Quite frankly I have given up on trying to keep track of things. Here are some:
C:\Program Files\Tracktion
C:\ProgramData\Tracktion
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Tracktion
C:\Users\{yourname}\AppData\Roaming\Tracktion
I can't say if any of those can be moved.

I keep Tracktion on my C:\ drive for speed, but store projects on an external D:\ drive for easy backup.
There's not much to that; I created a D:\Projects folder, and save all new projects to D:\Projects\project_name. Waveform creates all the necessary subdirectories within when first saving the project.

Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and even Deezer, whatever the hell Deezer is.

Thanks.. yes, that's vaguely what I remember. Did you notice if any of the Tracktion stuff you listed above, take up much space, and does it increase much, over time?pough wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 7:01 pm I don't think Waveform has a projects folder. Yes, it may be fairly straightforward, as you suggest. Probably the main mistake I made, last time, was not specifying my own chosen folder, for my first project. My D: drive is actually faster than my C: drive, and D: has massively more unused space. (Both are SSDs.)Watchful wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 9:22 pm I keep Tracktion on my C:\ drive for speed, but store projects on an external D:\ drive for easy backup.

Depends on what you mean by much. Also keep in mind that these folders include content (samples, loops, etc) and for products beyond Waveform, like Biotek, Collective, and Dan Dean Bass.Ally007 wrote: Fri Aug 11, 2023 8:03 am Did you notice if any of the Tracktion stuff you listed above, take up much space, and does it increase much, over time?
C:\Program Files\Tracktion 612MB
C:\ProgramData\Tracktion 14GB
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Tracktion 7GB
C:\Users\pough\AppData\Roaming\Tracktion 2.5GB
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Not sure if they can be moved, but I did create an additional location to keep Multi-sampler patches in on an external drive (see Settings > File Locations > Presets). Multi-sampler is now reading both locations, so I can probably move the Factory content (installed automatically to the C: drive) over to here. May be useful to you.pough wrote: Thu Aug 10, 2023 7:01 pm I don't think Waveform has a projects folder.
