Same knob to control modulation and expression?

I'm trying to use the mod wheel to control both modulation and expression. Has anyone found a way?
What I've tried, based on another topic was to create a virtual MIDI device off of my physical one but I don't know what I could do further.

What are you trying to do? mod wheel is at 0, then expression is 0. Mod wheel at 50% means expression also at 50%? Or are you trying to run mod OR expression independently?

Exactly! I'd like mod wheel to control CC1 and CC11 simultanesously. How can I achieve this?

I don't have an easy way to test this (I have no idea which synths respond to Expression) but maybe this will work. Use a Rack to duplicate the MIDI signal and run one through the MIDI CC plugin, which can change CC1 to CC11.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

You might not need the Rack. The MIDI CC plugin might pass CC1 through as well as CC11. The trouble is, the CC11 data streams though constantly, so it's hard to see what else is happening. Either way, give it a try.

One issue: that plugin might not exist in Waveform Free. I have never used the free version and you don't seem to have mentioned which version you are using.

... and if the built-in one isn't sufficient, the pizmidi tool collection is free

Thank you for the solutions! I'm currently using the free version. Midi CC does work with the free version but I don't know how to use it. I've tried all sorts of combinations like assigning through midi learn or directly. I don't even know what it's supposed to do :)
All I could get it to do was to assign the mod wheel (CC1) to control the plugin's CC3 knob. So physical knob can control plugin knob. But how can the plugin knob be used to further control other CC's?
And I don't know why the plugin only has CC1 - CC6. I need CC1 and CC11.

The MIDI CC plugin feels a little half-baked to me, but it might work for what you want. Think of it as being a translator for CC data. Whatever is coming in as CC1 data can be either changed or duplicated (I haven't been able to work out which) to another CC number.

It can also just be used to send CC data, which to me is a bit mystifying. Anyways, when the plugin is open, the knob is the value that is (or can be, anyways) sent. You can probably ignore it, since you have stated that you want to use the mod wheel. By that I am assuming you mean the mod wheel - the actual physical mod wheel on whatever physical MIDI device you're using. If that;' not the case, please be clear about what you mean.

The blue button allows you to select the MIDI CC # that you want incoming CC1 data to be turned into. Select Channel 1 and then CC11. Now anything coming into the MIDI CC plugin as CC1 data will go out of the plugin as CC11 data. And maybe still CC1 data, too. I don't know. As I said, I don't really have a way to test this without having to learn more than I want to about an instrument plugin. I'm really just a bassist.

Okay, I finally found a VST that does a lot of CC mappings and allows me to change them, so I was able to test things. It doesn't work. Sorry to lead you down the wrong path.

It doesn't turn incoming CC1 data into other-CC data, it just constantly sends out the value of the knob. The knob that doesn't get controlled by the CC# that it looks like it should. Maybe by CC1 through CC6 they just mean there are six CC knobs? That's bad naming.

I thought maybe you could MIDI Learn the knobs, but I couldn't find a way. Maybe they're meant to be automated? Yeah, that seems to work. So that's what it's for: mapping automation to MIDI CC.

What synth are you trying to do this with? Many allow you to flexibly set the control of a parameter based on a selected source, so if, for instance, LFO rate and filter are what you want, both of these can be controlled with MOD wheel.

This is done on a patch by patch basis in the synth or VST; so GOOD if you can customize the few you want; not so great if you use lots of different ones and want the same applied to all patches.
