I like MstereoSpread better than the corresponding mode in widener.

I've never played with the classic delay & phase things... Shouldn't the classic mode (and other modes) in widener be very easy to build in mXXX?

Post

Pretty sure the Classic mode in Softube Widener is the same concept as Bob Katz K-Stereo. It's simply the mid signal delayed and filtered and converted to out of phase (aka sides) then blended in.

There are several free plugins that can do this and you can even build it yourself within your DAW with basic utility tools.

Just started experiments. Your response seems to underline this: Is it THIS SIMPLE?

Yes, it really is that simple. The amazing thing is Bob Katz managed to patent it and was selling a hardware unit made by Weiss that cost thousands of dollars (like 4000$+). :)

The worst thing is, that "trick" has been well known for ages, finding it's roots all the way to the early 70's.

By the way, you can refine and expand that idea a lot further. Try for instance using a delay that you modulate instead of a static delay. Also try adding harmonics (saturation) to only the filtered side signal to further expand the illusion of width. Another trick is to use a transient designer on the signal before it gets converted to sides so that transients don't stick out as much.. etc etc. There are many ways to skin this cat and get interesting results.

Melda MXXX is the perfect environment to experiment with this and make a bunch of macro controls for it. Have fun!

Been using MWaveshaper as a clipper. Not as fully featured as Softube's new one but it does the job.
