Just putting this here, instead someone hasn't thought of it yet.

When you're buying that new improved saturation EQ or whatever, then notice that you already have a lot of effects. You just need to combine them.

So you want a saturated EQ of some kind? Then try:

[your saturation plug-in] -> your any EQ you have -> [your saturation plug-in]

[] signifies optionality

This already models alternatives to input and output saturations in EQs or other effects, but you can get tones your current plug-ins didn't have.

Also, post good examples of combining old plug-ins to form new ones.

A new reverb?

Your old reverb + EQ + [delays]

or

multiple of your old reverbs mixed together e.g. as

reverb into reverb into reverb into ...

e.g.

small hall -> large hall -> gated hall

If these are mixed together properly, then the individual delays will not stick out.

If you aren't familiar with emphasis/de-emphasis EQ: get familiar with it! This technique can be used to make nonlinear processes like compression and saturation more/less frequency dependent.

If you want to try mid-side processing, use the free MSED or EdIsDim to wrap a stereo plugin.

I have held off on the latest revision of Trash, because it feels to me as if that is ripe for this sort of treatment. The old Trash 2 vs some current waveshapers and convolution plugins in combination, to see how close that gets me, certainly prior to spending money on the latest.

Use a transient designer on the effects bus right before a delay or reverb. Isolate the transient so you can get the reverb splash without taking up space, or isolate the sustain so you can get pure ambience with no attack.
