Midi Clip Recording Issue

Ok I don't know if this issue is caused by a new option in WF 13 or user error on my part or what but it does not occur in WF 12.
To simplify, I start by adding a new 4 bar midi clip on track 1 then record a drum part. Now I move the Loop Start/End points to bars 5-8 and add a new midi clip:
I then record another drum part but it's not recorded in the new midi clip it's recorded underneath as shown in the image below. I have dragged the clip down to show that the midi is not recorded in the clip itself as it is empty:
In WF 12 the midi is recorded into clip # 2 as one would expect. I am using the same merge setting in both. So is this a bug or am I just missing a new setting somewhere?

You moved start/stop on the clip, but the recording pointer is still at bar 1 ?

Select the Midi input and look at the Actions in the Properties panel, several to choose from incl. Merge.

As I wrote I am using the same merge setting in both 12 and 13. In 12 it works fine as expected in 13 it does not. This is something I've been doing in every project in 12 since I started using it.
"Replace existing clips with newly recorded midi clips" seems to function as a workaround but that option is in 12 as well and Merge has always worked fine in it. Replace does not feel like a solution but as I said a workaround.
I can reproduce the issue 100% in 13 and it does not happen in 12. So either this is an intended design change in 13 or it's a bug. Feels more like a bug at this point as it makes creating and recording into midi clips pretty much useless. Perhaps it's related to the new clip launcher.
I'm going to send the report to support first thing in the morning and see what they say......

I see what you are saying, and no it's not working as I'd expect and how it works in 12. Looks like a bug. Merge seems to be merging a new recording to the first clip even if the new clip is recorded at a later time on the timeline, in 12 would be a separate new clip.Teksonik wrote: Sun Apr 07, 2024 4:29 pm As I wrote I am using the same merge setting in both 12 and 13. Yes it does feel like a bug or perhaps a process that has changed in 13 due to the new clip launcher. I have submitted a support ticket on the issue and provided a link to this thread as it's kind of hard to explain the issue properly in a support ticket environment. It's easier to provide the proper information in a forum environment.
So we'll see what support says whether it's a bug, design change decision, or user error but at this point I'd have to say it feels more like a bug since it does restrict the usability of clips. I think the fact that it still works perfectly in WF Pro 12.5 is an important clue.

Since Waveform has a recording bug with both midi and audio latency, I switched to using the Ripchord plugin (https://trackbout.com/ripchord) to record midi. The plugin works beyond all praise and has other interesting and nice features. And by some magic I don’t understand, it records midi correctly.
But this does not change the fact that errors need to be corrected in Waveform. In the meantime, this is one of the good workaround options. I hope this helps and makes your work easier.
Totally off topic: it would be great if Stochas had unlimited recording capabilities, just like Ripchord.

I've created a test project that allows this issue to be reproduced if anyone wishes to do so. Try recording MIDI from a controller into Clip #2 starting ar bar 5:
Make sure "Merge Newly Recorded MIDI into Any Existing Clips" is selected and set Record Count-In to 2 Bars.
In WF Pro 13 the midi data is recorded into the end of Clip 1 (which is extended past its original 4 bars) instead of Clip 2. In WF Pro 12.5 using the same settings midi data is recorded into Clip 2 as expected.
Here I've dragged down clip 2 to show that no data was recorded in it but instead into clip 1 which is extended in length:
Adding a third clip starting at bar nine makes things worse as it makes clip 1 and 3 merged and deleting clip 3 also deletes clip 1 and leaves clip 2 in place. Kind of a mess.
I've sent the project to support and I have an open ticket on the issue but the more I work with it the more it seems like a bug and one that will seriously affect the way I work.

Great news! From support:
"....thanks for reporting this.
We've fixed it now and will be released soon in 13.0.35 or later."
Support has been very responsive and I remain impressed.
