Custom Controller pickup mode (using loopMidi virtual midi port)

I am using Korg NanoKontrol 2 in cc mode with an intention of controlling Vst/i parameters.
I am able to do this through midi lern, but checking 'pickup mode' in controller setup does not make any difference, as the assigned parameters still jump to the position of the physical button.
I would like to find out if anyone knows how to get around this.

PS: using nanoKontrol2 slider/knob as input/output devices works as expected, albeit for panpots and faders.

Also curious, as I've had trouble getting pickup mode to work with my nektar lx61 in W13 (also using midi learn)
