I tried reaper on a Microsoft Surface Go with cpu speed of 1.7 GHz, sessions with many plugins don't spike cpu at all. I wonder which DAW currently rivals REAPER in terms of resource efficiency???

There is no other DAW on the planet that rivals Reaper for efficiency....
It is the king of the 15 MB install....
A tightly coded supersonic superstar...

Yep , and the main reason is because they take their time to do it efficiently .
No deadlines , no capital investors , no bloated feaures etc..

Bitwig is not bad either, but yeah. The Reaps is king.

Pretty amazing. Cubase without all their bundled stuff was around 500 MB and REAPER is just 15 MB yet can do everything cubase does or even more. This is some serious coding, man.digitalboytn wrote: Tue Jul 02, 2024 8:49 pm There is no other DAW on the planet that rivals Reaper for efficiency....

Yeah, I noticed that too. No advertisement, no collaboration with the "big" guys, no unnecessary features. Pro Tools install size is insane compared to Reaper and yet Reaper is snatching away a lot of pro tools users. And coding-wise, Reaper has its own script language, man that's genius.gentleclockdivider wrote: Tue Jul 02, 2024 10:03 pm Yep , and the main reason is because they take their time to do it efficiently .

I really do think Reapers code is clean for sure, but this whole 15mb thing cracks me up every time. At least on Mac OS it starts off that small, it balloons up as you instal, add in all the normal dependancies like SWS extensions etc. and check your app size. Mine is 154.7mb, closer to a normal lean DAW size. In fact Reason right next to it is 137mb.

But it is still just a 15 MB install...
Most peeps start out quite small in this world but over time, many of them get quite fat...
Same thing with Reaper

Seriously, I do appreciate the lack of loop content in Reaper. None of that has made any sense in other DAWs, but Logic and Live for instance also have built in samplers and drum machines, so comparing them to Reaper without any of that mentioned, in terms of initial instal size, is just disingenuous. It's not just "clean code" it's a complete lack of any substantial included sampler content, which of course may be preferable or not.

Reaper does have its own sampler. But we don't talk about it for... reasons.

Yep, a Simpler type sampler, but yeah not comparable to the Samplers in Live and Logic.EvilDragon wrote: Wed Jul 03, 2024 7:47 pm Reaper does have its own sampler. But we don't talk about it for... reasons.![]()
I dunno I sort of get it, but I do appreciate the somewhat full featured samplers in Live, Logic, Bitwig, Reason etc. There's something to not having to worry about samples in those DAWs, but I do prefer to just go with Kontakt and Falcon for real tweaking.

This is all true.
But I still prefer working in Studio One, Cubase, Logic, Ableton Live, or Reason.
Reaper has awful workflow, no matter how much you customise it. The inserts/effects window is pretty crap to use, and there isn't a single theme out there that rivals Cubase; particularly the mixer. You can't customize enough of the mixer to make it enjoyable to use.
I've used Reaper since 2008, but through gritted teeth and frustration all throughout that. Cubase is actually FUN to use.
IMHO, YMMV, m2p, etc etc.

I (re)discovered Reaper recently. Because the geniuses in Reason bandwagon piqued my interest in Reaper I decided to give it a go.
I still don't understand how and why but this is entirely true. Reaper efficiency is out of this world.
There is another aspect of Reaper (talking about corporate idiots getting in the way of DAW):
Depending on your learning and dedication you get to have an update with a feature set based on...yourself. F**** you slow developers in other DAWs.
With Reaper to my surprise, you are like you get every day a new update and it depends only on you. How so? Well, I realized how Reaper API and other tools are also INSANELY scalable + there is scripting.
I learned in the past two weeks that with Reaper you get to have features you want yourself (or someone built them already). So basically every week I learn something, some script and it's voila!! An updated Reaper made by me, my way. A feature doing what I want to be added to the toolbar.
And it's efficient.
WTF???????!!!!!!!!!!!!!
