When I try to edit an audio clip by dragging the handles at the top of the clip or changing the start or end time of the clip, the waveform re-renders with every little move of the mouse. The waveform image doesn't smoothly adjust like in other DAWs, it repeatedly re-renders from left to right during the dragging process making fine adjustments difficult by sight. Is this your experience as well? Is there a setting or a work-around for avoiding this? Thanks.

There is a setting that let's you use proxy files for audio clips. It's basically a freeze, or temporary render. Turn it off in the settings (global) , or on the clip itself.

Thanks. Will take a look. Still not sure I understand proxy files. Can you say more about them?

As far as I can figure, it is an option for reducing cpu load. Waveform allows clip based fx, which require proxy files option to be on. I see it as a non destructive render to save the application processing them in real-time. It also can be used with pitched/time stretched audio for the same reason, and also with audio clips that don't match the project sample rate. In some of these cases it very much affects the resulting playback sound.
The drawback is exactly what you posted in the original post. You can easily turn it on or off at clip level as needed when making quick edits. I have it set to off, globally, and turn it on when needed, as I do a lot of slicing and resizing samples.
