Does anyone know if it's possible to auto map step clips to a drum plugin?
It seems Crazy that you have to manually configure step clip notes for different plugins.
Alternatively is it possible to save user drum maps? I can't see where you click to save presets.
Thanks

It actually does it automatically if the plugin just happens to report its note name map to the DAW, but that's still unfortunately rare. The good news is that Waveform's own Drum Sampler and Micro Drum Sampler do it. The debatably good news is that you can use the MIDI Note Names plugin before your drum plugin to create your own name map.
Note that the plugin / preset / note name map needs to be there BEFORE you add the Step Clip. It doesn't automatically refresh.
Please note that all, some, or none of this may apply to the version of Waveform you happen to be using. I am using Pro 13.3.11 on Windows 10.

Surely there must be consensus by now...

Thank you Pough for replying to my question. I didn't know about the name midi note utility, so thank's for that. apart from the drum sampler and mini drum sampler (that do auto map) I also have
a few drum plugins including Groove Agent that, as far as I can tell don't auto map to step clips.
Even the Kits that come with Collective have to be manuallly mapped.
I think your suggestion, using the piano roll for drum hits is the way to go. Sometimes creating multiple step clips for different drum pattern variations is more time consuming.
Thanks again.

Collective is more a synth that happens to also have a sampler component that happens to also have some drum kits. I'm not surprised that adding drum map functionality wasn't a high priority. As far as I know, this drum map (or MIDI note name) thing was an innovation of Presonus that some other DAWs have added. It's been hard to find good information about it, which is frustrating because I want to tell a bunch of plugin developers they should get onboard but I don't know what to say. "Thing good! Do also somehow" probably isn't compelling enough.BernieBass wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 6:16 pm Even the Kits that come with Collective have to be manuallly mapped.
One of these days I will go through all my drum plugins and mark down which ones have this functionality and which ones don't.
I... don't recall suggesting that. It's a good idea, though, so I am happy to take credit.BernieBass wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 6:16 pm I think your suggestion, using the piano roll for drum hits is the way to go.
By the way, there is another way to do it. It was the original way. When you select a track, the Actions tab has an option called "Load MIDI note name map" that loads plain text files with the maps. Those text maps can also be imported into the MIDI Note Names plugin and re-saved as a preset.
Surely there must be consensus by now...
