I can see there are some parameters when creating an MFO, but I can't figure out how to perform PWM in realtime from the front panel of a Mux, is it even possible? Can someone help please, thank you :tu:

Mmm, my usual approach would be knock something simple up: connect an LFO to the MFO wave index with a square wave source and a PWM transform with a four step block wave, then adjust the Wave Index and see what happens... Whilst adjusting the UI knob changes the displayed wave form, the LFO alone apparently has no effect... However, sticking an oscilloscope on the audio output and then changing the LFO frequency shows it's definitely having an effect.

(I've not listened to it... so I've absolutely no idea if the above is any use...)

Thing is, I was wondering if it could be done to an MFO that isn't specifically set up for it in the way you describe. Because that way means that that MFO is restricted to that usage only doesn't it?

I think if you attach a Parameter Event Generator in between the LFO and MFO the UI will update

Attached is a quick example MUX with a Multi-Form Oscillator with 2 vector wave shapes, from pulse width 1% to pulse width 99%, that create a perfect PWM via the Wave Index.

That's a great example, thanks. But I'm always a bit more demanding (awkward) than that! lol
I use the MFO as a quick wave selector. So I have set up 10 waveforms in the wave index. This allows quick front panel control without delving into the deeper aspects, or opening more windows.

I was hoping there may be a way to modulate the pulse width of the currently selected wave index? Like a dedicated modulation input for the MFO would be ideal, but obviously isn't there, so I am guessing, it can't be done, except the way you have done so.

It was a bit rough and ready and the more waves that you put in the more complicated it gets setting offsets so not sure how practical it will be in reality but the concept works I guess.

i'm on an earlier version of MuLab, so am unable to load bibz1st preset. Apologies if the following is redundant.

You can pitch-modulate MFO to get mild PWM:
PWM MFO.zip
  • MUX preset in zip.
  • Front Panel has a knob for MFO's Wave Index, a knob for PWM rate, and an oscilloscope.
  • Unfortunately, it's not static and detunes MFO slightly.
  • Crucially, the modulator oscillator has a balanced waveform (saw, square, triangle, sine), and plays the same note as MFO.
  • The Audio To Modulation module is working at audio rate.
