What makes audio clips fail to load into the project?

Today, I keep finding that a couple of audio clips I recorded are empty when I launch TW. There is no waveform in the clip frame and no sound. I've seen audio clips being a bit slow to load, but not so often completely fail to load. What causes this, and is there any way around it, or will I have to re-record the sections? Thank you.

Update: I discovered something: the clips in question had comps. After unpacking the desired comp to a new track, I was able to drag it back to its desired location. So probem kind of solved, though I'd like to know why the clip content appeared to have disappeared.
